KEVIN'S VP2 BACKYARD WEATHER REPORT

5/18/12 at 7:00am. by Kevin Shaw at Gaithersburg, MD.

Thursday was a real pretty day, sunny, low dew points, more comfortable temps in the lower 70s after pleasant sleeping weather overnight with lows in the mid 50s. We should drop down tonight to around 50, then rise into the mid 70s on Friday with continued sunny skies. Upper 70s and sun on Saturday, then sun and highs around 80 on Sunday. Next week looks partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s and a 30 POP for showers and storms each day. Lows from Saturday night on should be somewhere in the 50s. Got a bit of a download problem with my VP2 right now that I hope I will be able to resolve sometime real soon, like tomorrow night or over the weekend.

I attended our May 2012 DC-AMS Chapter meeting on Thursday evening at the NWS Operations Center in the building next to where I work in Silver Spring. There was a presentation on Space Weather by Bob Rutledge of the NWS Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder CO. He spoke in general terms of the solar activity which they monitor and try to predict when solar mass ejections, etc head towards earth, figuring out when they should arrive, how strong they are, and what affects, if any, they will have on GPS, communications, etc here on earth. They have a website with a lot of information about what is going on in space, and they also have an email system where you can get updates on email of solar activity that might/will have an affect on earth and its systems.

They had a teleconference set up so he gave his presentation remotely from his Boulder office.  It was interactive, we could ask him questions through microphones hanging from the ceiling... Pretty interesting... They had some snacks at the meeting tonight, but certainly nothing that could be close to approximating a meal. Pretzels, tomato crackers that were quite good actually, small bottled water, crackers with cheese - that sort of stuff.
